There will be 100 beds (4 times the old Hospital) priced at market rates, currently about Euros 100/day all found. These will be both short and long stay, according to the demand mix, as already practised by EMERA at their other homes in this area. Sunny Bank will have a Charity Centre building in the grounds for close support of the residents and others cared for in their own homes, and hopes also to build up a fund for financial aid to those unable pay the full price. A small group of devoted volunteers kept a charity hospital going for more than a century and the community can only be grateful to them. But I am wondering how the current project perpetuates that spirit. We once had a hospital/clinic where almost anyone could be looked after for a few days or even weeks in Sunny Bank or as outpatients. It was a service available to hundreds every year. With the new system it seems to me we will have a limited number of retirement beds that will be occupied by the same people for long periods (usually until death) and so will benefit very few people in all. Unlike with the old Sunny Bank, there won't care on offer for everyone who needs it. Am I wrong? As someone likely to retire here in about ten to twelve years I'd be interested to learn what residents of the new Sunny Bank will have to pay.
