Riviera Merry Christmas?

Posted by: Davar in Uncategorised  on Print

Looking at the postings I'm begining to feel like the scrooge in Charles Dickins Christmas Carol....Hum Bug!!! well anyway, not really, that is,  in the true Spirit of Christmas.

Yet again Riviera Radio is blasting the coast with back to back Christmas music....like eating chocolate after the 3rd or fourth bar... one gets a feeling of nausea.

For me that happened a week ago after just two days having to hear the sad old, gandma got run over with a reindeer and the like, thereafter, numerous exchanges of emails with the station management, as they activly seek listners opinions, reveals everyone else loves it, and, they say,  in fact their listening audience increases..... just how they measure this is a bit of a mystry...

I will save my CD the BEST CHRISTMAS OF MUSIC until the apropriate time, play, and enjoy it.

So, any other opinions out there?

Here we go again with another whinge. Is there a gun to your head forcing you to listen to something you don't like? There are hundreds of other stations, you know and CDs too. Why don't you just turn the dial instead of griping?

My opinion is like Davar's. I may enjoy listening to Riviera Radio from time to time but I don't want to hear nothing but the same ol' Christmas music day in day out. If I had Christmas carollers coming to my door several times a day for the weeks in the run up to Christmas, I'd go barmy!!!

Maybe there are "hundreds of other stations" but I can't find many in English on my radio. What are they and how can I get them so that I may "turn the dial"?

If it's listening in English you want, there's always BBC on short wave and satellite. And there are unlimited stations on the Internet which you have access to because you are posting here.
Seems bizarre to live in a country where the language is French and feel compelled to listen to an English language station even if you don't like what it broadcasts.
Anyways, if the station thought it was alienating most listeners wouldn't they broadcast some Other music?

Quite right Smarty pants, thats just what I do, dont forget as well as CD's and other stations there are I pods and mp3 memory sticks with thousands of tracks of one's own choice, one wonders if the managment believe expats are bound to listen regardless, and as for the people who pay Riviera Radio to advertise, of whom I know quite a few, are they really happy with this policy? unless they are selling seasonal goods that is.

My computer isn't in my living or bedroom, so I can't listen to internet radio in those rooms where I'd normally have a radio, or in my car. My French is not yet that good (but am taking lessons), which is why I sometimes listen to Riviera Radio. I don't have an iPod either, can't afford one right now, all I have is a radio and CD player but a CD can't do all the chat or other non music stuff that a radio does.

Regardless of the "Riviera Radio playing Christmas songs yet again" saga, I'd like to pitch in with my Bah Humbug view of Christmas.

It's supposed to be the celebration of the possible birth, on an unknown date, of someone who may have been the son of a God that some people might choose to believe in, whilst others view the whole thing as either a huge con or a fairy tale. Any of those points of view is fine with me, I don't try to impose mine on others, although I've no doubt it's quite clear, and I expect the same in return.

What I can't handle is the crass commercialisation of what is supposed to be a religious festival. The falseness, the over indulgent parties and ritual over consumption of food and alcohol, the pointless sending of Christmas cards to people in whom we have so little interest that we don't even know they died until the card comes back 'deceased - return to sender', it all makes me want to vomit, especially when I think how many geese are tortured to death to produce one of the Christmas 'delicacies' in France and a few other countries.

A recent survey showed that most children think that Christmas is primarily about 'getting presents'. That sums it up.

Actually have you not heard the adverts 'todays xmas music on RR is brought to you by xxx'
It's a commercial operation and who can blame them for taking the money.Presumbly the clients are happy too or they wouldn't sign up for it.
Mike P-Agree with what you say in part but Christmas should be a time for gathering with family and friends and showing that you appreciate them.God knows in these dark times we all ned cheering up a bit and I see nothing wrong with throwing a big party and having a good time. We're only here once and the rate things are snowballing none of us might have that much time left.
Personally I like the xmas music in moderate doses. When I get tired of it I just turn it off.

Henry, you are right. If their advertisers want to sponsor Christmas music then that is the commercial decision they should make. No advertisers, no station, no jobs for the staff. It's pure commercial logic.

"Mike P-Agree with what you say in part but Christmas should be a time for gathering with family and friends and showing that you appreciate them."

Of course, but we shouldn't have to wait for Christmas to do that!

It is very out of character for me to complain about anything, least of all Riviera Radio (deep sarcasm!) but ..... at lunchtime I got into someone's car and it was tuned to RR and the noise coming from the speakers at that moment was: "Grandma got run over by a Reindeer", perhaps one of the most irritating songs of all time! After lunch, maybe 2 hours later, we got back into the car and ..... you guessed it!

MikeP - I'm slightly off-topic here, but with your mention of the overindulgence of festive fois gras reminded me of this video I watched the other day:
http://www.ted.com/index.php/t...able.html
Ironic that it was a Spaniard who claimed the crown from a traditionally French activity. Judging from some of your other postings, I thought you'd like that :-)

Oh, and my six-penneth for the festive season is:
- Whether you believe in the religious bits or not, this time of year is a great excuse to keep in touch with old friends.
- It's also an excuse to treat oneself or loved ones to a minor indulgence without going overboard.
- The relentless radio-delivered barrage of 'winter holiday themed popular music' is evil.
