Airport Scam

Posted by: Letters to Editor in Uncategorised  on Print

A couple of years ago you ran a story about a con man cadging money at the airport. I think it was a well-presented guy who asked for a couple of hundred euros for a taxi. Last week I was caught at the airport by a character who sold me some story about not having euros for changing his ticket because he had missed his plane to Newcastle the previous day and needed 18 euros. Well, it sounded a reasonable story and I was sympathetic if it was a genuine case. I was in a bit of a rush for the plane so I gave him 20 euros and asked him to write down his address and email. Well this chap was a bit of a nerdish character, about late 30s, and he seemed able to give an address without hesitation so I gave it a 50/50 chance of being genuine and 20 euros wasn’t a lot.

In case he was genuine and wanted to repay me I tried the email address which was a yahoo address – and I got an “undeliverable address” reply. So the odds on him being genuine decreased to about twenty to one and I thought I’d try the street address in County Durham. I did get a reply by phone, but it was from the occupier who said that the guy was a fraudster and they kept getting mail like mine as it was his father’s old address who had sold the house about 8 years ago. The guy, Andrew Gradon, apparently went about Europe using the same scam and was wanted by Interpol.

I expect the guy has moved on from Nice by now – but it’s not a bad scam if you can use it a dozen times a day and the amounts involved are not such that anyone is going to do much about it. But it is the sort of thing which Riviera Reporter readers should be aware of.

The trouble is that if someone genuinely needs a small sum to get back home and finds that everyone is a hard-hearted cynic, it would be a very cruel world.

I was also cheated by Andrew Gradon on 17. February 2009 at Prag airport. This person used the same story. He said that he missed the flight to fly back to the Midlands and he needed 380.00 Czech Krones (about 18?) to get his Easy Jet flight rebooked. I gave him 400 Czech Krones so that he could have some extra money to buy water. He said that he had no money left and would like to have some help. We excahanged our email address. His address was also a Yahoo.com address and it was undeliverable.
Well, I guess, these cheating methods do leave a bad taste in the mouth of not trusting anyone in the matter of money. But by doing so, if you do really avoid someone who is in real need, then you are going to have a guilty feeling. I had that feeling in me which told me "DONT" but I simply ignored my gut feeling and I fell for this cheap trick. I guess this thought me one more time a lesson, NEVER TO HELP ANYONE IN NEED.

Same for me in Frankfurt. I guess he pays his tickets to various places by cheating people. And I nhope he goes to hell since he closes the door for people who really are in need.

The same happened to me in Frankfort on March 24th. The Name he gave me was Andrew David Gradon with an address in Durham. The amount was 35 Euros for the flight back to UK. Of coarse the mail to andrewgradon@yahoo.com was undeliverable. However I will not really stop helping people but probably try to be more prudent.

Same to me at Cologne airport on 3rd of April 2009. I gave 70 Euros. I was in a hurry, came from Munich, it was late in the evening and I had sympathy with this guy. I sent a test mail to his mail address via my BlackBerry and the mail didn't return. Now I'm rich with an additional bad experience.

I too gave him 43 euros for a ticket to London, because he had missed his flight and as he said that rebooking it would cost 80 euros when he only had 37 and as his credit card wouldn't work again until the next day. I hope the police find him before I do. Whoever might have more information, please call 01626720771

Jôrg, that's a nice thought but I fear it is impossible.

1/ He always deals in cash so where is the proof that would stand up in court?

2/ He operates in several countries so which country would you prosecute in?

3/ Would anyone spend the time and expense to testify against him for such a small amount? The individual amounts are so small that the legal expenses to get him would be greater than the losses.

4/ Catch him under what name? We don't even know his real name or country of residence or anything else about him for that matter.

5/ If the police got on to him he'd just start using a different name. Maybe he does so already. We don't even have a photo of him so maybe there is a gang of "Andrew Gradons"?

6/ Even if convicted on a charge or 2 what would the possible sentence be for conning people out of 20 or 30 euros? A fine? If he has no bank account in the country where he is condemned it would be difficult and expensive to collect and certainly not be disuasive.

The best thing is to keep tracking him so that others are warned.

The guy get's around ... I was squared at Bremen airport on May 11. Same story. Wanted to get a flight to Stanstead by Ryan Air a day ahead and wanted 27 Euro.
I gave him 20 and considered it my "good deed of the day"
He seemed rather trustworthy ... really don't know what I'll do next time someone asks me for money.

You almost have to admire Mr Andrew Gradon. He only hits people for small amounts. There are several advantages to that.

Nobody would take legal action for 20 or 30 euros. And nowhere would a small claims court take seriously such a paltry amount for any one claimant. A group action would mean that people would have to travel from all over the place to testify. Forget it.

People part with such small sums easier than bigger amounts so he probably can hit quite a few "pigeons" (sorry guys!) in a day.

But it adds up. If he can hit 5 people an hour for an average of 20 euros each, he's bringing in 100 euros an hour. So even if he only "works" 2 hours a day, he has a monthly income of 6000 euros... tax free!

Moving countries helps cover his tracks. Seems like he's in Germany at the moment. Will be interesting to see where he turns up next.

Sooner or later I hope he runs into someone whom he's scammed, in a dark alleyway. Sadly I missed my chance to give him a kicking when he tried to scam me at Nice Airport (if it's the same guy).

People like him are despicable because they take advantage of the generosity and abuse the trust of others. I suppose it can be argued that he is not beating up little old ladies but this is a cowardly crime.

Here's another scam. The bogus charity collectors, three rather pushy African men, having finally been kicked out of Carrefour car park, are now plying their dubious trade in the car park just outside the walls of Old Antibes, opposite the port, near the archway where the Elephant Bleu etc are located.

I happened to see a Police Municipale and he confirmed that, in his words : "On a des soucis .....". I'm not quite sure if that means they're keeping an eye on them.

Bogus charity collectors are as old as the world and MikeP is right to suggest caution. We all know there are national collection days for charities like the Red Cross and RBL (Poppy Day) but the legitimate collectors are easy to spot.

Except for those two I never give in the street or on my doorstep (not that that seems to happen any more). I choose my charities based upon personal preferences without outside influence or canvassing and send in my donation for which I usually get a receipt for tax purposes (yes you can!).

The surest way not to get money out of me is to ask for it!
...
written by MikeP , 21 June 2009
Asking me for money in the street reduces the chance of me giving to about 0.5%. Having three pushy, verging on aggressive, Africans surrounding me and waving filthy pieces of paper on clipboards reduced that to 0% and made me go and find a policeman so that someone less gullible or more timorous doesn't give money to these vultures preying off peoples' kindness.

Charity scammers, along with Russian love scammers, are the lowest form of pondlife. Oh, and politicians come very close!

Calling the police is fine but has an offence actually been committed? What he is doing is despiccable and immoral, but legally, if he asks for money, albeit under false pretences, and people are naive enough to hand it over, has he broken any laws?

Hi everybody,

latest news about Andrew Gradon: Yesterday (22nd of october 2009) he asked me at Lyon airport for EUR 40,- because he missed his flight and had not enough money to buy a new ticket. As he grabbed me just at the entrance to the X-rays I "helped" him. Once in the lounge I wanted to check his address on the net via my Blackberry and found this site - frustrating. So I called the ploice, explained the situation and gave the a description of the guy. They wanted to check on the cameras if they've got something. Anyway: as nobody can proof nothing against him (cash, no traces etc.) he'll continue his sad way. Too bad that honest people in REAL difficulties will get less help the day they need it :-(

Once I passed through the x-rays I tried to check his name and address on the net via my Blackberry and found THIS site. Not amusing! I called the police, explained the situation and they promised to check the cameras in the airport. As I had to board I don't know what came out of this investigation. Anyway: there is no prove for a crime (cash) and in the worst case he could tell to pay me back when he'll arrive at home ... The sad thing is that the day a person is really in trouble and needs some money I might struggle to help ... :-(

Whilst it's always hard to understand the motives of others, I can't help but wonder what exactly this person, if it is only one person, is up to.

Hanging around airports is no fun - trust me, I've done enough of it although not for the same reasons as Matey - and neither is travelling by air these days. So quite why someone should spend their time skulking around airports to eke out a few Euros to get from one place where he doesn't want to be, to another where he won't want to be for very long, via a third rate cut price airline, is beyond my understanding.

It also raises the questions of where does he sleep, how does he eat, and is he making any money out of this scam? Is it the same person in these various sightings?

What is the point of this? What is the meaning of life? I just wondered if anyone has any ideas. Hi Andrew,
You're no doubt aware we made a feature recently about your trip round Europe for the BBC's Inside Out programme. We wanted to speak to you and get your side of the story and this is still a possibility as we are recapping some of our recent stories in the next two weeks.
We were interested as to why you do what you do and would really like to hear from you. How about doing a quick interview over the telephone with us?
Many thanks, Andy (producer, BBC Inside Out)

This man disgusts me. He says he went to good schools and had good friends but they obviously didn't help him become a good person.

He is a parasite living off people's goodwill, trust and generosity. He somehow justifies his pathetic existence with warped logic but the fact is that he is a common thief.

What difference does it make that his victims "can afford it" and its small amounts? Every time somebody falls for his scam the altruistic nature of decent people is eroded a little bit and that can only be bad news. He throws a stone into the pool and the ripples continue to spread out.

People like Gradon deprive genuinely needy people from the help of a good samaritan as, once caught out, kind souls are not going to be taken for a mug a second time.

The workshy piece of scum should go and get a job and make an honest living like normal people.

One thought, isn't it possible to have a poster campaign at these airports, concentrated in car parks, luggage trolleys, lounges etc e.g. "Beware of this Man"? Or get Easyjet, Ryanair, German Wings to put a piece on their website?

The above reply by responseregradon sums up what any normal and intelligent person with morals would think of someone like Gradon. Clearly Gradon has no morals, education or intelligence. He might think he is smart to have got away with serial theft for so long, but he's devious, and immoral, that does not equate with smart. You only have to read his illiterate and incoherent ramblings to work out that he's a dimwit with no education.

Sadly the police will probably do very little about this, but sooner or later Gradon will run into someone who will give him what he deserves. Now his face and tactics are known it can only be a matter of time before he gets what's coming to him. Meantime I hope he is looking over his shoulder and sleeping uneasily at night.
...
written by Harry , 23 February 2010
MikeP, I don't think that the police will "do very little about this". It's that they can't. I know a few French police nationale and they'd only be too happy to nab him, but for what? Taken one by one, his "crimes" aren't enough to hold him for more than a few minutes.

That seems to be what happened in Germany too. If I understand what Heinrich and Reinhard wrote above, he was conning people later the same day in the same airport he was arrested in!

Will someone catch up with him? Probably not as he has been getting away with it for 17 years by his own admission.

I watched the BBC exposé and the portait they had of him shows he is missing a front tooth. Maybe someone has already caught up with him. It doesn't seem to have slowed him down though.

Dear Walter Mitty/Andrew Gradon

It is a pity your ability to express yourself is so poor, because your book would be highly entertaining in the way that only a cheap trashy airport novel can be. You obviously live in a world of fantasy - have you been smoking that skunk a bit too much?

There aren't a lot of criminals who write their own confessions, you could join the ranks of the terminally stupid. You might even get away with it because I doubt if the police could make sense of your unpunctuated and incoherent ramblings.

By the way your Spanish is as pathetic as your English, you murder both languages.

If you'd like a ghost writer to write your book for you, please let me know, but I'd require payment up front, in full, in cash, and I'd take the notes to the Reserve Bank to make sure they were real. I'd also count my fingers and wash my hands after being anywhere near you. On second thoughts, I wouldn't take money from you, as being in possession of stolen property is a criminal offence.

Gradon : First of all I said nothing about spelling, I said you were unable to express yourself and that your ramblings were incoherent and lacked punctuation, although since you mentioned it, your spelling is abysmal too. Remember that what you write, and your reputation, are what people judge you by, and the way you write indicates someone who lacks education, pride, and intelligence, which is what one might expect of a petty con-man.

You probably think you're up there with the likes of Bernard Madoff, but he went for the big time and of course got bust big time too. At least he was good at what he did and deserves some admiration for that. You are just a petty amateur at the game.

Finally, I'm able to express myself without resorting to childish personal insults. My comments about you are based on what we all know and can see. I don't need to lower myself to your level.
...
written by nick dragon , 26 February 2010
To ,M P.So you think that Madoff,Made-off would be more APT,should be admired, perhaps you should ask the children of his victims who committed, such suicide, all for money ,such a shame,as Madoff would never have been able to spend it all, pure evil and greedy,I hope he gets what he deserves in his plush little cell, perhaps we should have a collection, send money to Madoff is gonna get it where the sun don't shine, what is his cell-mates name?So think about what comments are made as there are always victims,Andrew Gradon is just small fry,our politicians continually rip us all off and we do nothing, perhaps our priorities are forgotten when one is not a victim?

"Nossy twat" here! How sad that your brother has to post a message on a forum relating to your criminal activities to tell you that you are an uncle. Couldn't he have emailed or phoned you instead?

Also a bit rich you going on about graffiti e.g. "doesn't look nice" and "costs a fortune to remove". How can you be moralistic about people leaving graffiti when you "make a living" out of robbing people?

I think you must live in some parallel universe, perhaps seeing yourself as some modern day Robin Hood the only difference being you don't give the money to the poor.

And only starting to write English when you were 12 is no excuse for your illiterate ramblings, no excuse at all. What about people who only start to learn a foreign language at high school then go on to take degrees and become fluent, reading and writing it as good as a native speaker?
...

The simple fact is that Gradon is a theiving scumbag who hasn't got the guts to do an honest job to make a living.

Just like all petty scumbags he tries to justify what he is doing by pointing the other way.

Hey AG, it's not because bigger (and classier) robbers exist that litte shits like you are guilt-free. The bottom line is that you're a spineless little coward who can't face life's real responsabilities.

The address did exist at one time because if you try to open a Yahoo account with that name you are told it already exists.

So there are 3 possibilities -

1 - andrewgradon@yahoo.com hasn't bothered to empty his mailbox or use it in a very long time. Or he's too stupid to know how. When an existing mailbox goes dormant, Yahoo mothballs it but doesn't allow anyone else to reuse it because they might get emails destined for the previous user of the name.

2 - another Andrew Gradon (there must be a few in the world) registered the name but let it go dormant when he started getting demands for money from scumbag's victims.

3 - one of scumbag's victims realised the yahoo name didn't exist and grabbed it hoping that he'd hear from other victims that might help him trace the scumbag.

I'd guess it's number 1.

Hello Andrew, you seem to be getting quite a reputation. Somebody has just contacted me to tell me about this website. I'm interested to see that I wasn't the only person whose kindness and trust you abused; you stole 60 Euros from me at 6pm on Wednesday 28 May 2008 at Milan Malpensa airport, terminal 1.

I managed to find out a bit about you including the address of your father. How sorry and defeated he must feel, knowing that his son turned out to be a worthless piece of scum. I discovered that you were born on 14 February 1973 or 1974 and a couple of other things about you. From what I read on here I think most people wouldn't even wipe their shoes on you and if your illiterate claims to speak more than one language are true you must have cheated thousands of other non-English speakers as well. When you robbed me you seemed nervous so maybe you believe in the power of karma. I certainly do and I'm certain that karma will catch up with you in quite a nasty way some time.

A question for BenR and the others who have seen their generosity abused.

Has your experience with Gradon affected your attitude towards helping others, who may well be in real need?

Yes, the abuse of my trust has made me more cautious and now if I'm in any doubt the balance will be towards not believing the person.

If ever I do lend money I will demand collateral in the form of a watch, a mobile phone or something valuable.

Having spent a lot of my time at airports both as a passenger and in a professional capacity, I've seen and heard things many people wouldn't imagine. It's made me cynical and distrustful and when Gradon (or a Gradon clone) approached me at Nice I was suspicious and told him to 'get thee hence' or words to that effect. I had read about his antics so perhaps I was forewarned but I like to think my intuition would have told me that he was a petty crook.

Years ago a US American girl approached me with a hard luck story at a London rail terminus. The story rang true and I ended up paying for her to stay a night in a cheap hostel - maybe £20 - and giving her £5 which in those days was a reasonable amount. She asked me for my name and address and I had a feeling that she would, as promised, return the money at some point in the future.

Despite my positive feeling, even I was surprised when, a week or so later, I had the most delightful letter of thanks from her parents in the US enclosing a $100 note.
