Just how low can the human species descend?

Posted by: MikeP in Uncategorised  on Print

Some days go past without my wondering just how low the human species can descend in its barbarity towards its own species.  Comparing humans with animals tends towards insulting our four-legged friends,  for they only prey on each other out of need.

Yesterday was not such a day, for I came across something which sickened me.  From the death and misery and suffering of one of the poorest countries on earth, a country which has had a tragic history of natural and man-made disasters,  and now an earthquake killing tens, possibly hundreds, of thousands, emerged scams like this :

 Hello Sir/ Madam

I won't even attempt to describe my feeling towards people who can perpetrate this type of scam, I would be unable to do so using language which would be fit for publication.

All of these emails orginated from Nigeria,  shown by a simple check of the message headers, and apart from the poor spelling and grammar,  have many other hallmarks of being scams, for example requests to send money via Western Union or Moneygram.

Genuine emails from reputable organisations will not come from domains such as yahoo.com, hotmail.com, gmail.com, and so on.     They will also not use 'follow me' type phone numbers such as UK + 44 70xxxxxx numbers.

If it looks like a scam, it probably is.  You can't win a lottery you haven't entered.  President Abasanjo's ex wife does not want to share her millions with you, and Bill Gates won't send $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for each time you forward an email. Nor will Nokia send you a free phone if you forward an email to 10 other people.

You won't grow a cyclops eye or die from breathing poison air if you ignore and delete these emails.

Be careful, it's a jungle out there.

To answer the question in your title I think we've seen throughout history that there is no bottom limit to human depravity.

For those of us who are closer to the higher limit than to the bottom, perhaps you could suggest a list of worthy organistions we could choose amongst to send our help Haiti contributions to? Ones that do indeed put our money where their mouths are.

I am involved with a charity called Helping Hands which was started by volunteers at Amadeus in Sophia Antipolis. They are currently raising funds for Haiti, specifically for the Association Ede Timoun Yo (Aid the Children), as per the following memorandum which was sent out :

For the last week, we have been hearing daily reports of the terrible tragedy that continues to devastate Haiti in the wake of the earthquake that has severely damaged Port au Prince and Pétionville.

While massive efforts to bring in the essentials of food and water are being organized globally, the Association Ede Timoun Yo (Aid the Children) is making an appeal for donations in order to find secure lodgings for the children cared for in the following 4 orphanages from which some Amadeus people have or are about to adopt children:

Nid d'Amour (70 children)
Nid d'Espoir (25 children)
Mamie Lolo (25 children) and
Notre Dame de la Nativité (70 children)

Additionally, long term problems are mounting, as many of the children are quite sick and they are running out of medicine, food and clean drinking water.

To show our concern and commitment, Helping Hands is collecting donations for the Association Ede Timoun Yo from now through February 4. You can get in touch with the Helping Hands contact in YOUR building and make a contribution BY CHECK made out directly to ETY (for Ede Timoun Yo).

All donations will be transferred, by Ede Timoun Yo, directly to the orphanages' account, so that the children and the personnel who take care of them can be placed in housing that is in a safe condition.

We ask you to make the checks out to ETY and NOT to Helping Hands.

Thanks in advance, for your generosity and caring.

If anyone wishes to donate I would suggest this cause. You can donate via this link :

Alternatively if you know someone who works for Amadeus (it employs over 3000 people locally) and can give them a cheque, made out to Ede Timoun Yo, they will ensure that it gets to a Helping Hands member, or you can contact me via the Riviera Reporter.

Otherwise I would suggest the Croix Rouge Francaise, or Medecins San Frontieres, who are both working tirelessly in Haiti.

Here's another example of a common scam, and a particularly despicable one. An advert is placed on a website advertising 'cute' puppies for adoption - typically Yorkshire Terriers.

Here's how it goes :

I expressed an interest (purely a wind up), and they just send back a standard reply :

Thanks for the quick response regarding my babies Pren. and dandy there are still up for adoption to a new home that has time and love for pets.there are health guaranteed and will come along with all her papers both health and registration papers.their names are pren and dandy below are a few current pictures of theirs there are 12 weeks old, home and potty trained.there are socializes with kids and other home pets.I have had a few
families contact me and i am still to decide which home to let them go
to. there are both AKC and CKC registered. I am re-homing them because i
have been promoted at my job site and i will need to work more hours
of the day so i will have less time to look after them I don't mind
giving them for free as long as i can be assured that there will
provided the best at their new home.If you don't mine me ask a few questions;

Do you have kids
Do you have any experience with puppies
Will you breed them in the future?
Will you send us updates about them from time to time and pictures?

I will be waiting to read from you before i can tell you if i will let
you have them or not. there are free to a good home but their new family
will be responsible for their delivry charges if that will be
necessary, we had to post all over because we want to re-home the puppies as soon as possible. any lovely family that we will decide to give them too will stand the chance to pay only for their delivery charges.Waiting to read back from you as soon as possible
cheers

So I wrote back to them :

Hello

I got information that you are having Yorkshire Terriers for adoption. Actually they are very good done in a clay oven with rosemary and coriander, so I hope you can let us have them. We will send you photos of them dished up and served with chips and baked beans.

We are an elderly couple and we love dogs, as stated above. We don't have kids because we ate them too.

Please let us know how we can these nasty yapping little dogs as soon as possible

Thank you so much

And the scammer's reply, confirming that they simply send a standard reply and haven't read, or understood, my email to them.

hello

i am very glad to read from you again to let you know i strongly believe that you are the one for my puppies and that there will be happy with you and your family complete with them wonderful love they can provide but i have one thing that you need to do for me is that you promise me that you will take good care and love my puppies. because all i ever wanted for them is happiness if there are happy that makes me fine so let your word be your bond and keep your promise. So if i may ask how soon do you want them home so that i can start preparing them for new home. You will only pay for the delivery gargeis of the puppies we are located in RUE DE RIVE 20 MEGARA ATTICA in GREECE are you taking the two of them. Thanks and looking forward to read from you soon
