As the Dutch prepare to celebrate their fifty years of existence, the Irish Association PACA, based in Nice, has yet to reach its fiftieth week. As we’ve recorded over the years, there have been several earlier and aborted attempts to start Irish clubs or associations here. This time we’re more optimistic. The new group has launched with a committee of three enthusiastic and energetic Irish women (don’t be misled by the names): Mary Mitchell, Nessa Antzenberger and Jacqueline Bellone. It also looks as if the influx of Irish to this area will continue – indeed, as the Celtic Tiger develops a distinct limp their number might grow even faster. Says Mary Mitchell, “We hope to enrich and add fun to the lives of Irish residents, non-residents and friends of the Irish, all generations included.” Upcoming activities include a ceilidh toward the end of September.

Finally, a reminder about a useful peat smoke-flavoured website: www.europeanirish.com that “connects people interested in Irish culture and activities to Irish resources, events and news throughout Europe”. Here you’ll hear about everything from Gaelic football matches to Kila in concert.
