“It’s going great,” so says Mary Mitchell, founder-president of the Irish Association which recently celebrated its first anniversary. “We’ve got a simple aim – to allow Irish people here and friends of Ireland to get together for fun, chat and music.” Meetings are often held at the Roche Marina Hotel in Villeneuve-Loubet. Adds Mary, “We have in mind to set up sub-branches along the Coast to cut down the travelling people have to do.”
The association has linked up with the Antibes-Kinsale group, focused on the twinning of those towns and led by the enthusiastic Wolf Burg. There’ll likely be a joint bash for St Patrick’s Day. Talking of Ireland’s patron saint (a Welshman, by the way), some members of the association attended the recent ceremony at Saint-Honorat to mark Patrick’s time on the island. As one member told us, “We noticed some rather toffee-nosed people huddled around that Mr Joannon, the Honorary Consul. I’m told they said some of us were too casually dressed for the occasion. That made us laugh.”
Finally, Lucy Clohessy tells us that the Princess Grace Irish Library has a children’s section carrying several hundred books by Irish writers, everything from fairy tales to science fiction. Find out more at www.monaco.mc/pglib
