A TAXING MATTER

I live part of the year in France and part in England and I rent out my French property through a U.K. website when I’m not using it. As I am a U.K. resident and pay my tax there I had assumed that I not liable for tax in France on my rental property. I'm now being hounded by the French taxman for back taxes on the rental of my French property. What gives?

The FNAIM, an association of French estate agents, is working with the French government and the tax authorities to enforce tax and advertising legislation, and crack down on owners of rental properties and internet sites offering holiday gîtes and villas.

More than 350 websites offering private homes for rent are under scrutiny and are flouting the law according to FNAIM.

Tony Tidswell of FranceVoila.com website – one of many that offers help for those who own French property – claims that this will hit the English community hard.

If you are renting a property in France, all the income from that house is considered as being earned in France and tax on this income must be paid in France. Websites advertising properties to let in France are all liable to prosecution should they refuse to comply, as are the owners.
