When you thank your bank

“Thank,” that is, in the French sense of “dispense with their services”. Elaine in Saint-Raphaël says her bank has refused her an overdraft and she’s decided to switch to another. Will this be difficult? Well, assuming she’s not been a delinquent client it shouldn’t be. This is what she should do: at least two months before closing her existing account she should open her new one, paying in a minimum of around 160 euros in order to get a cheque book and bank card; she should also ask for RIBs (relevé d'identité bancaire - bank identity documents) and send them off to organisations who routinely credit or debit her account (employer, EDF, for example). Once her first salary is paid in she can start using the new account. Before emptying and closing her old account she should make sure all debits have been settled. The class of ’48.
