“All for one, one for all”
Jennifer is spending a year in Nice and is thinking of getting together
with two other girls to enter into a joint tenancy or colocation. That
means all three will sign the lease and — this she ought to think about
— it will almost certainly contain une clause de solidarité
which means that each signatory has total responsibility for payments
(rent and charges). If one tenant defaults or takes off the other two
would be required to make up the total amount. If Jennifer decides at
any point to drop out of the arrangement she would have to give the
landlord three months’ notice by registered letter with recorded
delivery … or find an acceptable replacement. Colocation can get
complicated.
