Paying Rent In Cash Print

Cash up front

Czeslaw writes to say his landlord is very nice but insists he pays his rent in cash. Is this legal? Is this something that could cause problems?

No … and yes. There’s no law that says rents have to be paid by cheque. But Czeslaw should be careful. He must insist on a signed receipt (“une quittance”) otherwise he’ll have no proof — required by law if there’s a dispute — that he’s made payment. Of course, the landlord could have problems if the fisc found out (which wouldn’t surprise me) that he’s not declaring his rental income.
