Having a go

Mark lives in Monaco where, he tells us, “there are more and more burglaries”. He says he’s been “a keen amateur boxer”, and wonders how far he can go “in dealing with intruders”.

Careful! The French courts — and, I imagine, those in Monaco — look carefully at cases of “legitimate defense”. Any physical measures used against an attacker or an intruder must be “proportionate”. Immediate action is shown more understanding than punitive or vengeful responses carried out later, but beating the hell out of a burglar (which I’d be all in favour of) could, sadly, lead Mark himself to the dock.
