Cor (short for Dutch Cornelis, if you didn’t know) went to a bar in Nice one afternoon and lingered over a coffee for “an hour or more”. He then ordered another. When he got the bill he noticed he’d been charged €1.60 for his first coffee, €1.85 for the second. He didn’t make a fuss but concluded that this was a traditional part of “the Côte d’Azur welcome”. What do I think?

I sympathise with Cor’s suspicions but more likely the café had moved on from its day tariff to its evening prices. As long as relevant details are displayed, this is totally legal. My friend Joel, a waiter in a café on the Avenue in Nice, tells me he knows of one bar in the city which runs four different tariffs from early morning to late night!
