Hugh Mitford-Raymond has taken over as chairman of the Nice branch of the British Association. He combines this post with a similar role at the South African International Association (SAFI) which he founded and which seems to be flourishing. Some people (including in this column) wondered about the justification for two South African clubs here. However, as Peter Piper, chairman of the South African Club pointed out in our letters pages, his organisation “is purely social” while SAFI also aims “to support community conservation projects in Southern Africa”; in other words, “two associations with differing membership profiles and objectives”. There should, we hope, be some overlapping of membership – and certainly both groups can count on this magazine’s support. Meanwhile, Hugh Mitford-Raymond points out something in common between the British Association and SAFI and which he hopes to develop: “They’re not just lunch clubs – they’ve both got a strong benevolent activity.”
