POPPY  APPEAL

The June/July edition of the Reporter referred to the importance of supporting ex-service people and their families who are in need of help. Now that Rememberance Day, 11th November, is approaching we remind our readers of the part played by the Royal British Legion in providing this support.

The Legion is now approaching its 90th Anniversary. It was originally founded to care for those disabled and distressed ex-servicemen who were in urgent need after the First World War and were insufficiently provided for by the government. This need has continued ever since for casualties from the Second World War, the Falklands, Kuwait and now Iraq and Afghanistan.

Today the Royal British Legion provides retirement homes, advice, financial assistance and loans to needy ex-service people. If there were no further casualties – highly unlikely in our unstable world – this assistance would still be required until 2070. The funds for all this are raised principally from the annual Poppy Appeal and donations.

Poppies and Collection boxes will be available from the latter part of October in prominent locations such as Anglican churches in Nice, Cannes and St. Raphael and places frequented by English speaking residents.
