Getting points back
- And now a figure to make you take seriously the government’s
crackdown on bad drivers: last year 37,000 people lost their licences
and that was a staggering (as they say) 80% increase on the number for
2003. Licences are lost in two ways: either the driver in question runs
out of points and this leads to an automatic cancellation of the permis
or, the licence is withdrawn by a court. To take the first case, what
can you do to get your licence back? For six months you aren’t allowed
to drive. Then you can volunteer for a medical examination and
technical test, advisedly after a spell at a re-training centre (even
if you don’t think you need to it makes you seem serious). After this,
if your licence was issued at least three years before the date of its
suspension, you have to take the theoretical examination (on the Code)
again; if it’s more recent you must take the practical test again as
well. All this can be an expensive business. Could be cheaper to buy a
bike.
