Sunny Bank - Discussion Print
Written by Anthony Vyvyan

Thank you for your note on Sunny Bank in your last issue. I would like to spell out that our goal is to ensure that, in the spirit of Sunny Bank over more than a century, no people in need are excluded for lack of means from a secure retirement in an Anglo-friendly environment. So “Sunny Bank Charity” has been set up as a legally separate association able to receive tax-free legacies and gifts. With volunteer and financial support Sunny Bank can expect once again to be a significant contributor to the anglophone community in our region.

Vyvyan of the Sunny Bank charity writes that their aim is "to ensure that no people in need are excluded for lack of means from a secure retirement in an Anglo-friendly environment". As someone likely to retire here in about ten to twelve years I'd be interested to learn what residents of the new Sunny Bank will have to pay. Aidan Dougherty, by email

The "spirit of Sunny Bank" has always been praiseworthy. A small group of devoted volunteers kept a charity hospital going for more than a century and the community can only be grateful to them. But I am wondering how the current project perpetuates that spirit. We once had a hospital/clinic where almost anyone could be looked after for a few days or even weeks in Sunny Bank or as outpatients. It was a service available to hundreds every year. With the new system it seems to me we will have a limited number of retirement beds that will be occupied by the same people for long periods (usually until death) and so will benefit very few people in all. Unlike with the old Sunny Bank, there won't care on offer for everyone who needs it. Am I wrong? I'm not looking for an argument, I just would like precise information about the numbers of people who can be treated at a time.

Sunny Bank is a registered charity and French association. Surely it has an obligation to be transparent about what precisely it will do with the money it is asking for from the community. I find the silence rather deafening.

I've only been here for a few years so never knew anything about "the spirit of Sunny Bank" and don't understand the whole thing. Is Sunny Bank a charity or a commercial care home?

Thanks to your readers (Issue 125, page 4) for drawing attention to the key challenges for Sunny Bank as we work to establish a new Medicalised Retirement Home at Mouans-Sartoux in cooperation with our commercial partner, EMERA, who will build and operate it. There will be 100 beds (4 times the old Hospital) priced at market rates, currently about Euros 100/day all found. These will be both short and long stay, according to the demand mix, as already practised by EMERA at their other homes in this area. Sunny Bank will have a Charity Centre building in the grounds for close support of the residents and others cared for in their own homes, and hopes also to build up a fund for financial aid to those unable pay the full price. A more complete set of information is available on the Reporter website as linked to at the end of this discussion topic above as well as on http://www.sunny-bank.org.
