Tourrettes - A Few Facts Print
Written by Riviera Reporter

In 1024, Tourrettes was recorded as "Castrum de Torretis". From the 16th century to the Revolution it was known as Tourrettes-lès-Vence. In 1982, a bureaucratic error caused the "s" to disappear, making the official name Tourrette-sur-Loup, but the villagers and politicians voted to ignore the "official" and retain the "real" name.

From 1880, Tourrettes-sur-Loup agriculture has revolved around the violet - it's the only place in France where the flower is grown as the main cultivation, with 11 families. The Fête des Violettes - a tradition since 1950 -  takes place early March.

Tourrettes sur loup est le seul endroit en France où la violette est cultivée comme culture unique ou principale pour, environ 11 familles. Vers 1880, l'activité agricole de la commune s'est essentiellement tournée vers cette fleur.
