Okay, the reform of the
quarantine laws in the UK made it easier to travel with dogs and cats - but you
pay dear to transport pooches, in particular. A reader in the Var says he had to
pay £550 to bring an adult Alsatian from the UK. What can I say? easyJet doesn't
accept animals (they say it slows down the turn-round of the aircraft) and our
reader wanted to use BA because he is a high-end Executive Club member. Dogs,
once considered to be excess baggage, are now categorised as cargo and charged
for accordingly. They're very well looked after, though.
And Air France is no fun for fatties! The French
carrier is very dog-friendly and still carries pooches as excess baggage with
smaller animals allowed in the cabin. But Spinetta's people are less indulgent
to overweight human passengers. One obese Gaul - he weighs in at 160 kilos - is
suing the carrier because check-in staff insisted he pay for a second ticket
before allowing him on board. According to trade commentators, this is likely to
become routine on most international airlines. According to an FAA report in the
US, "The average passenger has put on 10 kilos in the past 10 years - and that's
pushing up aircraft payloads and that's carbon negative."
