All I heard was this heavy breathing Print

But who was the breather? Okay, you've noted the number that came up on your screen but who was at the end of the line?

To find out you could call 08 99 78 24 06 (charge €1.35 plus €0.34 per minute) or go to TOPTEL 3617 on the Minitel (which can still be useful, see!) and you'll get the name and address if your caller was on a landline or you'll hear the personalised identity message from a mobile. A couple of caveats however: if your heavy breather is "liste rouge" (ex-directory) the system doesn't work and the introductory message is long as is the case for many 08 numbers (remember that you're paying to listen).

A better and completely free system has been in place on the internet since April at www.pagesjaunes.fr/quidonc. This site also allows you to find every occurrence of a name throughout France (it took less than 5 seconds to find another Patrick Middleton in Bordeaux) and gives their landline number but not their mobile.

And talking of mobile telephones, if you decide to switch to a different operator for some weeks now it's been easy to keep the same number. You have to ask the company you're moving to to cancel the contract with your existing operator and take it over. This whole procedure shouldn't take more than 10 days.

There is a similar site providing the same facility, www.ctqui.com.

Another useful piece of information is that you can use the www.pagesblanches.fr site to find name and phone number from te address. You just type the address or street name and postcode into the 'ou' box and it will bring you up the name(s).

Of course these also don't work if the heavy breather is 'liste rouge'.
